Drinking Water

Isaiah 41:17… Poor and needy seek water…Their tongues fail for thirst….

WHY WATER?

Right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's one in six of us. A large proportion of those suffering are in India.

The huge and growing population of India is putting a severe strain on all of the country’s natural resources. Most water sources are contaminated by sewage and agricultural run-off. India has made progress in the supply of safe water to its people but gross disparity in coverage exists across the country. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water. In India, diarrhoea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily—the same as if eight 200-person jumbo-jets crashed to the ground each day. Hygiene practices also continue to be a problem. Latrine usage is extremely poor in Andhra Pradesh; only 14% of the rural population in this area has access to a latrine. Hand washing practices are poor, increasing the spread of disease. In order to decrease the amount of disease spread through drinking-water, latrine usage and hygiene must be improved simultaneously.

WOMEN & WATER

This problem especially affects woman and nursing mothers. In many Indian villages, women face the daily challenge of collecting water for their families. They often walk great distances and spend hours each day carrying water to their homes. Women are often only able to collect dirty water and well owners frequently chase them away.

BUILDING WELLS

Mission for the Rural People is helping to combat the problem by drilling water wells. Once the wells are in place, we teach the villagers basic health practices. So far we have provided 47 clean water wells to villages in the local area while a further 150 await our assistance. Once we provide the well we help to educate the villagers in good hygiene practice and the maintenance of the well. So far our work has added significantly to the quality of the standard of health in our part of Andhra Pradesh.

YOU CAN HELP

You can be part of our vital health-giving work by donating a bore well. The cost of each bore well is £100 or $200. 100% of your donation will fund direct costs associated with the construction and maintenance of the bore well. A plate with your name and country will be placed next to the well as a gesture of gratitude for your support.

To sponsor a bore well please contact Pastor Ratnam at missionfaithbank@yahoo.com or call him on +91-98-6688-2124.
